Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit fruitCold pressed from the rind of the grapefruit, the essential oil is citrus-y, floral and fruity.  It’s clean and fresh.

Grapefruit is said to aid in weight loss and is often used in weight loss products.  Since I have a bit of a weight problem myself, I’ve started using a drop in my seltzer in mid afternoon to give me a boost in my energy level and to calm those food cravings.

Grapefruit is said to help with hangovers, by diffusion or inhaling the oil from a cotton ball or piece of tissue on which a drop of oil is placed, or directly from the bottle.

I like to use it in the shower.  Turn off the shower for a moment after you’ve finished washing, put a couple of drops in your palm, rub your hands together and rub it over your wet skin.  Stay away from sensitive areas.  Turn the water back on and rinse off.  It just makes me feel better. Or you could dilute with a carrier oil for an after shower body oil.  Grapefruit doesn’t have the extreme UV sensitivity of other citrus based essential oils, so you don’t have to worry about sun exposure.  Grapefruit is useful in skin preparations for oily skin.  Combined with witch hazel it can be an astringent tonic for oily skin.  Grapefruit_15ml

Properties:

  • stimulant
  • tonic
  • antidepressant
  • antiseptic
  • disinfectant
  • diuretic

Grapefruit is generally considered safe for human consumption, so it can be used as a dietary supplement, or used in cooking.  It shouldn’t be used for children under 6, and adult dilution is 1 drop per 4 oz. of beverage.  For children over 6 dilution should be higher.  Make sure you only use 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils.  They can be found at doTERRA.  http://www.mydoterra.com/sharonbwilbur/

Obviously the same warnings always apply.  If you’re under a doctor’s care for a condition requiring medication check with your physician for any possible interactions with your other medication.  The FDA has not evaluated the effectiveness of any claims.

Carrot Seed Essential Oil

Carrot Seed oil is steam distilled from the seeds of Queen Anne’s Lace (daucus carota), or the wild carrot plant.  It has a very strong earthy and warm aroma.  I really like the grounding scent of this oil.  My daughter is repulsed by it, probably only because of it’s potency.  It’s a matter of personal preference.  Just a drop adds a pleasant base to oils like ylang ylang and lavender when mixed together in a carrier oil for a face moisturizer.  This is one incredible oil that packs a healthy punch.  But be careful that what you are buying is 100% pure daucus carota essential oil, harvested from the seeds of Queen Anne’s Lace.  There are many places to buy carrot seed oil, make sure the company you decide to buy from is reputable.  Native American Nutritionals is one of my favorite places to look in cases like this, when the oil I want isn’t carried by doTERRA.  They also have very high standards in every single oil they put their name on.  Young Living would be another safe option.  I would be very wary of any low cost carrot seed oil on the market. Never buy any oil if it is labeled as “natural” “fragrance” or listed to be used for “aromatherapy”.  Cheap carrot seed oil is likely adulterated in some way, which decreases or may even eliminates some of the health benefits.  Keep in mind that fragrance oil or “natural oil” is not the same as pure essential oil.QueenAnnesLace

Benefits of Carrot Seed Oil:EssentialOil
• Antiseptic
• Antiviral
• Detoxifies
• Diuretic
• Disinfectant
• Digestive Support
• Purifier
• Stimulant
• Tonic

Carrot Seed oil is an effective antiseptic.  When applied to wounds, it can prevent infections.  It can cure infections of the skin as well as numerous skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, carbuncles, sores and ulcers.  When ingested* as directed it can help cure infections of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract.  It effectively relieves bloating and gas as well by regulating the flow of digestive juices.  It also helps your body to flush toxins from your system because it is a diuretic.  This benefits tissues, blood, muscles, kidneys and the liver.  Also, it’s immune-boosting antioxidants help fight off viral infections such as the flu, mumps and the common cold.

In addition to wounds, its benefits for the hair and skin are numerous.  It’s disinfectant qualities are incredible.  To use this oil as a skin cleanser, add a drop to a teaspoon of olive, almond or jojoba oil and massage into your face.  After 3-5 minutes, rinse your skin with lukewarm water and blot dry.  I use a little carrot oil in lotions, salves and hair and scalp conditioners.  Suitable for all skin and hair types, it can help keep your skin looking young, nourished and rejuvenated.  Mature skin benefits greatly by the improved elasticity and texture.  Carrot Seed oil can also help reduce the size and appearance of scars, wrinkles, discoloration, cellulite, and prevents sagging while evening out your tone and texture.  To reduce the potential of photosensitivity, always dilute with a carrier oil when applied topically.  If you experience issues with photosensitivity, try to reduce or eliminate your sun exposure for 12 hours after use.  On the scalp, Carrot Seed essential oil encourages new hair growth while helping to prevent hair loss.  It improves elasticity in hair, even in curly hair, preventing breakage and frizz.

For me, Carrot Seed oil’s real magic lies in its ability to rejuvenate your skin, tissues and blood at the cellular level.  It stimulates growth of new cells and tissues, which is helpful, especially to the mature body that might be slowing down.  It is believed that this quality in conjunction with its antioxidant properties, purifying and detoxifying benefits, neutralizes free radicals and even helps fight cancerous cells.

As a stimulant, this oil really performs.  Carrot Seed oil stimulates the circulatory system as well as metabolic function.  It stimulates the production of hormones and enzymes, as well as gastric juices and bile.  It also helps keep your digestive system on track, by promoting movement through the intestines.

Women who suffer from endometriosis or other painful menstruation conditions will find relief when using this oil.  It helps keep your hormones steady and improves the process, which results in less pain and more regularity.  For centuries, women used the seeds of wild carrot to prevent pregnancy.  This oil is more potent than a spoonful of seeds, and may cause bleeding, so please use care*.  WildCarrot

*Do not use this oil if you are pregnant.  Ask your doctor how this oil can help you before use if you are nursing.  Because Carrot Seed is a stimulant, do not use on anyone with Epilepsy or if there is a risk of seizure.  Can be used diluted one drop of essential oil to 5 drops of carrier oil topically on children over 6.  If you have any medical condition or are taking medications, consult your doctor before use.  Do not use internally at all unless the supplier suggests it as an appropriate use.  When taking internally, so so strictly as directed by a doctor or certified aromatherapist.  Carrot Seed oil overdose can cause vomiting and convulsions.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium_15mlPotent and floral, this essential oil is an important oil to add to any collection, and a must for the home physician’s kit.  To extract Geranium essential oil, the stems and leaves of the geranium plant (Pelargonium graveolens) are steam distilled.  It’s health benefits are numerous including its ability to balance hormones, clear and repair the skin from acne, dermatitis, eczema, burns, cut and other skin issues, fight infections of the upper respiratory tract, and promotes mental stability.  Because Geranium is a popular addition to fragrances, use care when shopping for it.  Do not buy oils that are labeled as “fragrance”, “natural”, or “food grade”.  Only buy essential oils from reputable companies that stands behind their products.

Benefits of Geranium Essential Oil:
• Antibacterial
• Antimicrobial
• Insect repellant
• Cicatrisant
• Hemostatic
• Cytophylactic
• Diuretic
• Deodorant

The antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of Geranium essential oil make it a wise choice to swab onto a wound, using a 50:50 dilution.  It supports the immune system by removing and prohibiting microbes, fungus and bacteria from multiplying and invading the body.  This, along with it’s hemostatic (speeds up blood clotting) and cicatrisant properties allow your skin to heal quickly, cleanly and without complications.

Geranium essential oil, when applied to the skin will help reduce scars (cicatrisant), improve elasticity, inhibit growth of bacteria, smooth out melatonin distribution, and helps improve blood circulation, which makes it a remarkable addition to facial moisturizers and treatment for oily to extremely dry skin as well as those suffering from Rosacea.

When taken as directed internally, it can benefit your kidneys by increasing urination.  Urination is responsible for eliminating most of the toxins from your body.  In addition to toxins, urination removes fat, sugar, sodium and aids digestion by eliminating excess acids and bile from your system.

The antibacterial qualities of Geranium coupled with the skin benefits make this essential oil a good one to add to a deodorant.  Use in aromatherapy is also beneficial because this oil is a circulatory oil, meaning it exits the body through perspiration.  So if your workout is strenuous, it could make you smell like flowers while destroying body odor.

To use this oil, diffuse or use topically by diluting it 1:1 with a carrier oil and rub it into the skin.  To take internally, make sure your Geranium essential oil is 100% pure and add one drop to 4 fl. ounces of liquid.  Children under 6 should not use Geranium internally, and any topical applications should be diluted 1 drop of oil to 3 drops of carrier oil.  Children over 6 should be 1 drop of oil to 2 drops of carrier oil.  If skin sensitivity is present, raise the amount of the carrier oil or stop using it altogether.

For an easy tick repellant for dogs, put a drop in your hand and simply wipe down their backs.  For humans, put a dab on the inside of your wrists, your ankles and a dab behind the ears.  No ticks!

Pets benefit from geranium too!  Aromatherapy is safe for your pets.  You can apply this directly to dogs, 1 drop and rub head to toe.  I do not use any essential oil topically on my cat or bird without the advice of a veterinarian.  Horses, especially mares seem to benefit from geranium aromatherapy or diluted and added to an all natural castille soap shampoo.  Any small wounds benefit from the same antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that humans do.  If there is ever a question on wounds, always seek the advice of your veterinarian.RoseGeranium

Speak with your doctor about using Geranium essential oil if you have any medical conditions.  Don’t try to cure any disease with Geranium Oil yourself, always consult the advice of a physician for any health issues. Don’t use before speaking with your doctor if you are on any medication, pregnant or nursing.  It can interfere with your medication.  These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Mentha piperita is peppermint’s botanical name.  It was first thought to be a species, but it is now known to be a hybrid cross of spearmint and watermint.  It doesn’t produce seeds, but spreads by its roots.  The essential oil is steam distilled from the whole plant.  Peppermint

Peppermint has a high menthol content, which makes it refreshing and stimulating.  If you find yourself tired at mid afternoon, a drop rubbed between your palms and inhaled can stimulate and refresh your emotions.

What I find so helpful is that it can reduce digestive problems.  It can be calming to the stomach, either taken internally or rubbed on the stomach area.  Adding a drop to your water can freshen your breath, settle your stomach, and reduce heartburn symptoms.  It is also said to reduce flatulence.

Its menthol properties make it useful for respiratory support in adults when rubbed on the chest or as I was told, on the bottoms of your feet instead of products containing menthol and petroleum.  Add it to fractionated coconut oil for a cooling massage oil.  It is stimulating and refreshing when diffused.

I’ve used it in my homemade lip balm.  When a few drops are combined with beeswax, coconut and cocoa butter its just plain yummy.

It should not be used on children under 6, and used with greater dilution on children over 6.  If pregnant or nursing, check with your physician.  Always if you are in the care of a physician for a medical condition, check with them to make sure that the use of a particular essential oil will not interfere with any medication you are taking.

If you’re taking essential oils internally always make sure they are 100% Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade.  You can find two kinds of peppermint essential oil at doTERRA.  PBeadlet_Detail_US_WEB_v1The beadlets are pure peppermint essential oil in a small round caspsule in an easy to carry vial for a quick burst of freshness.  http://www.mydoterra.com/sharonbwilbur/

Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil

cinnamon-stickA common household spice in the US called Cinnamon is usually ground from Cassia, which is related to cinnamon and has similar characteristics as cinnamon does.  Cinnamon Bark essential oil is more costly than Cassia and a bit more intense.  Steam extracted from the inner bark of the Cinnamon (Lauraeceae) tree from Indonesia, the oil is used most widely as a stimulant.  Take care that what you are buying is actual Cinnamon Bark oil and not that of the leaves.  Both are widely available and they are different oils.

Cinnamon Bark is regarded as safe, however you really need to be careful not to ingest more than directed.  It’s hotter than a fireball and can cause a fair amount of discomfort (yes, it has bit me back).  In aromatherapy, cinnamon is used to clear the air of viruses and stimulate a better emotional state of mind.  Topical applications are always diluted with your choice of carrier oil and then applied to sore muscles or joints.cinnamon

Benefits of Cinnamon Bark:
• Antiseptic
• Antispasmodic
• Antiviral
• Astringent
• Disinfectant
• Stimulates moods, appetite and circulation
• Antibiotic for bacterial and parasitic infections
• Antidiarrhea while stimulating appetite

Companies have been adding cinnamon oil to toothpaste and mouthwash for its antiseptic benefits for decades.  Not only does it taste great, it leaves your mouth clear of bacteria and most viruses!  It is also known to gently benefit adult-onset diabetics by helping to lower blood sugar – its properties contain a chemical that works like insulin*.  Cinnamon bark oil is added to creams to reduce muscle spasms and also to help relieve joint and muscle pain or soreness.  People have used Cinnamon bark oil in small amounts (1% dilution) in warm water or tea to soothe the stomach and combat diarrhea.  In larger amounts, you may make your problem worse.  There are many people who say this oil should never be ingested by anyone.  I tried, I didn’t like it.  It was way too strong for me.

Cinnamon bark oil can be added to vodka or water to spray on surfaces to disinfect them, and it makes your kitchen smell lovely.

Please use with extreme caution after consulting your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing.   Children should not ingest Cinnamon bark oil as it could cause vomiting and diarrhea.  My daughter is okay with this oil topically when I use extra carrier oil in addition to other oils for colds.  I would not use it topically or internally on any child under six.  The claims above have not been evaluated by the FDA.  Use care with this oil, as it is recognized as generally safe.  Some people will be more sensitive to it than others.  And make sure you talk to your doctor about Cinnamon bark essential oil.

*If you have diabetes, please consult with your doctor before use.  If you take insulin, taking Cinnamon bark oil could possibly cause hypoglycemia.

Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli is an essential oil extracted by steam distillation from the leaf of the plant Pogostemon cablin, a bushy herb PhotoPlantPatchoulirelated to mint.   The fragrance is slightly minty, musky, and very pleasant.  Its is used in the perfume industry and to scent laundry products and other soaps.

Patchouli is said to be beneficial to skin, and can be used to reduce wrinkles, stretch marks and scars.  When diffused, the fragrance can be grounding and balancing.  Balancing is a term used in essential oils to describe a helpful effect on emotions which can work many ways to improve mood.  For instance if you happen to be depressed it can cheer you, and if you are over excited it can calm you.  It is used in an aromatherapy recipe previously posted for autumn scents.

To diffuse, use 3 or 4 drops in your diffuser.  For topical use dilute with fractionated coconut oil to to avoid skin sensitivity.  Usual dilution rate is 5 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil.

  • It can calm emotions when combined with Vetiver and rubbed on the bottoms of feet.Patchouli_15ml
  • It has anti-fungal, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Cassia Essential Oil

Cinnamomum cassia is its botanical name.  The oil is extracted using steam distillation from the bark.  It has a warm, spicy scent, very much like cinnamon.  Cassia has been used since ancient times, mentioned for use as far back as the Old Testament.  Cassia_15ml

Cassia has been used for emotional and physical well-being.  It is said to contribute to a healthy immune system, settle the stomach and aid digestion.  Blended with citrus or clove and ginger essential oils it becomes a wonderful holiday scent when diffused.

Cassia is very strong, however and should be diluted.  It can be very irritating to mucous membranes if inhaled or applied directly to the skin. It can be diluted with coconut oil for a warming massage or to soothe specific sore muscles and joints.

Combining a drop with lemon in a glass of water can ward off hunger and aid digestion.

It can be used sparingly in cooking as a spice.  Remember, essential oils are much stronger than the spices in your cupboard.

Directions:

  • Diffuse 3 to 4 drops in your diffuser.
  • Dilute 1 drop in 8 oz. of liquid.
  • Dilute 1 to 2 drops in 2 tbs of carrier oil.  Test in a small area.  Increase if necessary.

Do not use with children under 6 and in children older than 6 greater dilution should be used.  If pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor.  Always avoid sensitive areas.CassiaBark

Only Certified Therapeutic Grade Essential oils can be taken internally.   http://www.mydoterra.com/sharonbwilbur/

Health claims for essential oils have not been verified by the FDA.  The FDA does issue a “generally recognized as safe” for human consumption designation (21CFR182.20).  Cassia has that designation.  If you have a health condition and are on medication, check with your doctor before use to avoid interactions with your medication.

Rosemary Essential Oil

RosemaryCarrieMegan_zps83d79862The popular culinary herb, Rosemary, has been popular in Mediterranean kitchens for centuries – probably even before there were kitchens.  The herb aids in the digestion of meat, and tastes wonderful when rubbed on chicken, beef or pork.  But this post is about essential oil.  I wouldn’t ingest this oil.  It is really, really potent.  For internal use, stick to cooking with the plant.

Rosemary essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the plant Rosmarinus Officinalis.  It belongs to the Mint family, which includes lavender, basil, myrtle and sage.  It is a kind of evergreen that grows wonderfully in warmer climates that don’t have hard freezes, and smells absolutely divine in the garden or near your front door.

The health benefits of Rosemary essential oil are numerous.  From growing hair to insect repellant to healing organs such as the liver, brain and heart to strengthening the entire body.

Benefits of Rosemary Essential Oil:
• Treats indigestion
• Appetite stimulant
• Regulates the creation and release of bileRosemaryOil
• Stimulates blood flow, improving circulation
• Stimulates hair follicles
• Slows down premature hair loss
• Benefits dry scalp
• Disinfectant
• Removes oral bacteria, improving oral health
• Soothes respiratory problems due to allergy, colds and flu
• Antiseptic and antispasmodic
• Helps eliminate eczema, dermatitis, oily skin and acne
• Improves focus by stimulating brain activity
• Rich in antioxidants

• Repels insects

The comforting aroma of Rosemary essential oil diffused will lift your spirits and improve concentration and lower stress.  Always dilute the oil before using topically using olive oil, fractionated coconut oil or another carrier oil at a ratio of at a maximum 2:1.  Dilute more if sensitivity is present.  For children over 7, try adding a few drops of rosemary essential oil into their favorite shampoo and conditioner as a guard against head lice.  If they don’t like the smell, use geranium.  There are ongoing studies of the benefits of rosemary.  This is truly a powerful oil.

Do not ingest Rosemary essential oil.  It has been know to cause severe allergic reactions, muscle spasms and vomiting.  Do not use if you have high blood pressure or are prone to seizures unless consulting your doctor first.  Do not use on children.  Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing.  It has been know to stimulate the uterus, and there are claims that it helps to regulate the menstrual cycle.  Excessive use could cause a miscarriage.

Only use 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils!

As always, discuss the use of Rosemary essential oil with your doctor to be sure there is no interference with any medications you are taking.  Do not use this information in place of your doctor’s advice.  The above information has not been evaluated by the FDA.

Clove Essential Oil

ClovesA potent addition to your essential oils collection would be Clove.  While care must be taken when using this warm, sweet & spicy oil, its benefits are numerous and well documented.  The oil is extracted from the stems, leaves and/or buds of the Eugenia caryophyllata, or Syzygium aromaticum, an evergreen tree native of Indonesia and the Malacca Islands.

Different companies will sell different variations of Clove essential oil.  While oils made from the stems, leaves and buds contain Eugenol, the active ingredient in Clove oil, they can be more irritating to skin than an oil extracted purely from the clove bud.  That’s not to say that clove oil doesn’t have the same antiseptic, anesthetic and antifungal properties as clove bud oil, all variations do as long as they are 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oil.  The clove bud oil has the highest content of Eugenol and is the least likely to cause as much irritation.

All clove oils should be diluted before use.  People have used clove oil to treat a wide range of ailments for centuries, from toothaches to skin wounds.  A drop on a q-tip & applied to a sore tooth will bring relief, but so will a (safe) 1% solution in an oil applied to the cheek or outer jaw where the toothache is present.  To apply to skin, use a cream or an oil base and keep the clove content under 1% to avoid irritation.  Clove oil should neither be used on children under 6 nor on women who are pregnant or nursing without first consulting a physician.

• Helps lift depression
• Strengthens memory
• Fights weakness and lethargy

• Promotes bone strength
• Helps maintain a healthy metabolism
• Keeps infection at bay
• Relieves mouth sores, sore gums and toothache
• Soothes rheumatism and arthritis
• Relieves respiratory problems
• Helps relieve digestive complaints
• Repels insects

If you want to talk about antioxidants?  Clove oil is the winner!  It contains the largest antioxidant value of all the essential oils.  It is very high in manganese, which is recommended for bone strength.  In addition, calcium, vitamins C and K are prominent in clove.  Omega-3 and phytonutrients will enhance the immune system. Clove also supports and strengthens humoral immunity as well as aids in insulin production, fighting adult onset diabetes.

As always, discuss clove essential oil with your doctor to be sure there is no interference with any medications you might be on.  Do not use this information in place of your doctor’s advice.  Do not use on children or if you are pregnant or nursing.  The above information has not been evaluated by the FDA.
